Ontario Power Generation Winter Festival of Lights 2015

Niagara Falls Winter Festival of Lights

The Ontario Power Generation Winter Festival of Lights 2015 is one of the most wonderful events of the year in Niagara Falls starting on November 21st and running until January 31st, 2016 (sing with us).

The 33rd annual Ontario Power Generation Winter Festival of Lights (a.k.a. Winter Festival of Lights to us local folk) is just 17 days away. It’s definitely an exciting annual event that we all look forward to every year. It’s the official start of the holiday season and the largest Illumination Festival in Canada. The city flicks on their “magic” light switch and Niagara Falls becomes alive with over 3 Million twinkling lights and over 125 animated displays.

Don’t miss an “all new” opening ceremonies on Saturday, November 21st in Queen Victoria Park. This year is full of excitement starting at 6pm.

Opening Ceremonies

There will be two shows at 6pm and 7pm and the highlight of the night is the CHROMATIQUE show, which will immerse the audience into a vibrant world of colour, light and sound. These innovative and unconventional performances will radiate fun, energy and excitement. Combining art, music and technology, CHROMATIQUE is an entertainment phenomenon full of surprises and spectacular effects.

Another dynamic performance of the night is a humourous number by the ensemble of dancing Tin Soldiers that brings the traditional festive spirit with its joy and cheer. Smiles are guaranteed – no one has ever resisted Tin Soldiers’ charm!

Picking up the winter holiday spirit, the mysterious LED Danza embodies grace and power of the light. The journey of the light that brings hope and happiness is told by the sublime beauty of this captivating dance. Created and produced by Creativiva Inc., this breathtaking theatrical show celebrates the start of the winter holiday season in Niagara Falls and will create an unforgettable experience for anyone who sees it.

Opening night is also your chance to see the debut showing of the Fallsview Sound & Light Show and to tour the Festival’s 5km illumination route to see the beautiful light displays throughout the Niagara Parks Winter Wonderland, Dufferin Islands and in surrounding tourist districts.

Following the two shows in Queen Victoria Park, the festivities will continue in the Fallsview District , debuting the “Spirit of Niagara” Sound & Light Show Presented by Fallsview Casino Resort and Tourism Partnership of Niagara at 8PM.

Dufferin Islands

Year after year, visitors love the tradition of Dufferin Islands. This will be the second year that Dufferin Islands will feature the Canadian Wildlife displays including: a moose and bison, howling wolves, charging rams, bears, beavers, geese and deer. This winter wonderland also includes the Sylma, a 20′ x 35′  magnificent tower of cascading lights enhanced by projection illuminations on over 70 trees and a 30′ water feature which will be choreographed to music.

Also, if you tune into 100.5 FM during your drive through Dufferin Islands you will enjoy Christmas music to get you in the festive mood.

This 2 hour tour involves one of the scariest history lessons and a secret opening to a building (the Officers’ Quarters) that is usually off limits during the summer ghost tours.

NEW Niagara by Night Tour

After many months of planning we are very excited to share our Newest Niagara Tour, the Niagara by Night Tour, which is exclusive to the Courtyard by Marriott Niagara Falls and our on-site Tour Company, Above the Falls Tours. This tour is where exhilaration meets moments of nailing biting behaviour (and let’s be truthful about it – your heart may just beat a little faster that night).

Battlefield and Beyond Cemetery Walk

The first part of the tour is called the Battlefield and Beyond Cemetery Walk and takes place in one of the oldest and most recognized cemeteries in North America, the Drummond Hill Cemetery. This tour gained its name, Battlefield and Beyond because it touches on some historical facts on the various battles that took place here, such as the “Battle of Lundy’s Lane,” as well as and one of the bloodiest battles between the British and Americans in 1814. But it also goes beyond the battlefield and gets into the deeper stories of some of the famous settlers buried at the cemetery, such as Laura Secord, a famous Daredevil, Burr Plato, one the first African American slaves to come to Canada via the Underground Railroad, members of the International Order of Odd Fellows (IOFF) and Freemasonry and more. We don’t want to give too much away, but a few of the Above the Falls Tours’ associates had the pleasure of experiencing this walk the other day and let’s just say that a few hairs will rise on the back of your neck by the end of it.

As you enter the tour, you will be greeted by these legendary iron gates.

Now mind you the first tour starts at 7:30pm on June 28th, so you the cemetery will not be in complete darkness (like the above picture). However we’re not sure what is more frightening? Experiencing a cemetery in complete darkness or experiencing it as the sun is starting to set where you can visibly see all of names on the tombstones (are we starting to paint the picture for you?) Your guides will also be in character to give you the full experience of what happened on Drummond Hill 200 years ago.

Hornblower Niagara Falls Illumination Cruise

The second part of the tour is equally as exhilarating. The second stop takes you to the NEW Hornblower Niagara Falls Illumination Cruise. Here your adrenalin will continue as you hop aboard a 250 passenger catamaran ready to set sail past both the American and Canadian Horseshoe Falls. Here you’ll have front row seats to the starry skies and panoramic views of the dazzling city lights and famous coloured illumination of both Natural Wonders. This cruise promises to astonish and amaze.

The Niagara by Night Tour will be launching on Saturday June 28th and will be available every Saturday throughout the summer. So come and experience an evening of fright and delight brought to you by Above the Falls Tours located in the Courtyard by Marriott Niagara Falls hotel.

Reserve your spot today, as spaces are limited. Call 905-353-4002 or click here for more details.

Father’s Day Fun-tertainment

From near to far, from here to there, fun things are everywhere in Niagara

Wine Country

The Niagara Peninsula is one of Ontario’s most acclaimed grape growing and winemaking districts. The most difficult part will be choosing which of the 70 wineries to visits. For the full list, visit www.niagarawineryguide.com. Here’s our suggestion, visit them all. After all, research has proven that red wine is full of antioxidants which may be beneficial to your health.

Niagara Wine Festival

The Niagara Wine Festival is here just in time to celebrate your dad. From June 14th – 22nd experience over 25 wineries and events. Purchase a discovery pass and enjoy two weekends of wine and culinary adventures at wineries across Niagara.

Hop on over to Niagara Oast House Brewers

Microbreweries are becoming just as popular as the wine in the Niagara Region. Our favourite is Niagara Oast House Brewers. From the friendly staff to their delicious hops. And it is easy to find – it’s past the old oak in the big red barn in Niagara-on-the-Lake.

This popular microbrewery is listed in the Top Ten Reasons to Visit Niagara.

Like Dr. Seuss said, from near to far, here to there fun things are everywhere in Niagara (okay so we took the liberty of changing his quote slightly, but you know what we mean).

Treat dad to the ultimate present by pairing one or all of the above with overnight accommodations at the Courtyard by Marriott Niagara Falls. We’re in the “Centre of it All” both near and far from it all.
